CD-R, One-offs, Writable CDs are all names
for the same thing. A CD-R is a disc which can be written
on a desktop machine which will act in most ways the same
as any other CD-ROM. These are commonly used for testing
of programs, archiving data, distribution, and
premastering.
Currently CD-R is the only way to truly test a CD-ROM
program before making the leap to mass replication. CD-R
is much cheaper than mass replicating an order only to
find some part of the program doesn't perform properly
under the conditions a CD-ROM is expected to work under.
CD-Rs are played in a normal CD Player the same as any
other CD-ROM. Playback speeds can accurately be tested on
a variety of equipment setups.
CD-R is an excellent way to archive data which doesn't
change often. Lifetime expectancies are debated but with
debated ranges between 25 and 600 years it won't matter in
many cases. Because CD-R is searchable, easy to produce
multiple copies, can not be effected by a computer virus
once written, and can hold huge amounts of material, it
makes for an excellent media to store computer files,
programs, accounting records, or entire hard drives.
CD-R makes for a good distribution tool because the
disc is very lightweight keeping shipping cost down. It's
large enough to hold data and programs on a single disc so
your end user doesn't need complicated installation
routines using multiple floppy disks. It also give a good
professional image to the work you provide your customers
and is more durable than its floppy counterparts.
For those times when you need enough copies of a CD-ROM
to make mass distribution practical you'll still need a
data form to supply to the replicator. By supplying the
data on a CD-R you eliminate many potential errors. The
mass replicator knows exactly how you want your data and
has something they can guarantee will match the final
discs. By having us make your premasters you'll usually
save a lot of money from the fees replicators charge plus
you'll get the chance to test your program before
investing in all those copies.
